It’s kinda ‘nuts’ paying up to $20 for a bag of healthy breakfast cereal.
Especially when this is such a fun (and educational) thing to do with the kids at home.
It’s not hard and doesn’t take long either.
So here’s how to make organic homemade granola at home. The amount of variations are limitless, so have fun with it!
Step 1: Buy in organic ingredients in bulk
2-3kg bulk bags from Ceres are perfect. We used use these ingredients:
- organic coconut chips
- organic raw almonds
- organic cashew pieces
- organic maple syrup
- organic cinnamon.
…. or use honey with other seeds and nuts. Totally up to you.
Step 2: Soak and activate
Cashews should be soaked for 4 hours and rinsed to remove (naturally occurring) toxins. You can soak the almonds too to activate them.
Step 3: Toss in a bowl
Our kids loved getting their little hands immersed and sticky. Let them go to town with it for the full sensory experience.
Step 4: Lightly roast in the oven
Spread out on a baking tray and roast on medium heat for 15 minutes. We have a gas stove and did 10 minutes from the bottom and 5 from the top. Or go for a few hours on low heat if the idealist in you prefers them raw.
